Every year around this time I guess these birds called
purple martins migrate north from Brazil to Texas. I remember them from last year and they are back in full force this year. I think they look really neat, maybe beautiful on the sides of the roads and everywhere I have seen them. There are just so many in one place at the same time. I couldn't resist taking this picture in Arlington the other night, but I gotta tell ya this is NOTHING compared to how it is in some areas. It's a pretty amazing thing to see when you drive around right now.
You can ask Sam and Stone... Pull up to a corner here and and it sounds like machine guns are spraying your car, but as it turns out it is hundreds of purple martins "dropping trowel". (that means going "numero dos" around my house, thanks to Sam and Stone's dad.) We try to keep it classy around here. Can't ya tell? I thought it was "trow" but according to the WORLD WIDE WEB it CAN be both. Thank goodness that is cleared up!
Don't get me wrong I would much rather have the poo than the machine guns.

We had purple martins at our house when we lived in Bergen, NY. They like their housing to be out in the middle of the open and we had a lot of land back then, so in the middle of the lot was a tall purple martin house. The birds would come back every year to build their nests and raise their young. They are wonderful birds because they eat insects, mostly mosquitoes. Definitely one of the reasons why we loved having them around. :)
